Our brothers and sisters in Myanmar (Burma) and China
It has been a difficult month for millions across the world. Besides all of the issues already happening, there have been 2 major natural disasters. First, Cyclone Nargis hits Myanmar and death tolls can reach as many as 100 000 and as many as 2 million people could be homeless. Not much later China suffers it's largest earthquake in 30 years and as many as 30000 people were killed .
Our thoughts, prayers and wishes for help and some peace are with the victims and their families. Click Here for message from his Holiness the Dalai Lama
Why are the Tibetans protesting? And what you can do to help.
Over 1.2 million Tibetans have been killed by the Chinese government.
6000 monasteries were destroyed. And the tortures, killings and human rights violations continue.
It's time to help the Tibetan people have a voice. For over 50 years they have been subjected to murder, tortures, oppression, the occupation of their land and the gradual and systematic destruction of their culture. In the past years Tibetans have tried peaceful protests in an attempt to show the world that there is a dire need for help.
The new wave of protests started on Monday, March 10th, Tibetan Uprising day when 500 monks from Drepung monastery staged a rare march in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa to ask for human rights and freedom of religion, an act that the Chinese government called "an illegal activity that threatened social stability." About 2,000 Chinese security personnel fired tear gas to try to disperse 600 monks and started beating and arresting them. Over 60-70 monks were captured. In seeing their monks being beaten, the Tibetan people, in an outburst of the frustration that has been brewing in the region for over 50 years started breaking the chinese signs and business that have now replaced all of the Tibetans in the city of Lhasa. The violence escalated and over 80 people were killed by the chinese police.
Paldon Gyatso was incarcerated in Chinese prisons and labor camps in Tibet for 33 years. Below are some of the torture instruments used on him
One of the requests of the current protests is the release of the monks who were captured. There is overwhelming evidence that torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment are a routine part of detention in police stations, detention centres, labour camps and prisons in Tibet. First-hand reports from released prisoners describe the use of electric batons applied to the torso, mouth, soles of feet and genitals; the use of lighted cigarettes to inflict burns; the use of truncheons or rifle butts for beatings; the use of dogs to bite detainees; and the use of manacles and chains to restrain prisoners for long periods. Because of that, most political prisoners perish before they are ever released.
All the Tibetan people need now is your participation and hope that people would defend a country that has no oil, no political influence and no weapons to offer. Their contribution is much deeper. What they offer is compassion, peace and lessons on how the world can be fixed.
