Pema Ts'al Schools
Right now, the Chinese government charges Tibetans to allow their children in school, but the price is higher than most Tibetans can make in a year. When they do get accepted, they are submitted to an education that devoids them of their values and of their Tibetan culture. To ensure that their children can get an education, many parents see no alternative but to send them to India and Nepal, where the exiled Tibetan community will care for them. That means escaping Tibet with their children and living everything behind or sending them with nuns who are escaping prosecution over the Himalayan Mountains for what is sometimes a month long trip in the winter, which is when they have the best chance of crossing the borders. Sometimes they get shot or die in the crossing, and at times, their parents and families can never see them again. These children arrive scared, alone and hungry, and its places like Pema Ts'al's Schools that help provide for them.
